The network works out who owes whom.
Imagine one bank owes £12 million for its customers’ card spending while it is owed £9 million from the other direction. Netting leaves a £3 million obligation. That avoids moving money separately for thousands of purchases and reduces the amount the participants must transfer.
For sterling card payments, Visa Europe and Mastercard Europe settle in 24-hour cycles. Weekend and public-holiday cycles settle on the next business day in the Bank of England’s RTGS service. Customer messages travel outside RTGS, so checkout can stay fast while final interbank settlement waits.

A place where nobody needs the perfect words.
At five monthly cafés across the Isle of Wight, people living with memory loss or dementia can sit with families, carers and professionals who understand the same uncertainty. There is tea, conversation, expert guidance and room to relax. Wendy has turned what may be a final family cruise with her parents into a challenge: a full-body dip in near-freezing fjord water, raising money so more families can find that welcome.
