If the name is similar, the response can show the actual account name. That lets you correct a typo or spelling variation and try again. In 2019, the regulator weighed the privacy cost of returning that name and judged the limited reveal proportionate.
The other responses are yes, no match and unavailable. Unavailable can mean a timeout, an opted-out vulnerable customer or an account that does not exist. Most checks need a name, sort code and account number. Account type and a secondary reference, such as a building-society roll number, can also decide the result.
