The final fill replaces the temporary amount.
For a Starling customer, the bank can temporarily reserve up to £120 of the available balance. If the fuel costs £42.60, that becomes the purchase and the unused £77.40 becomes available again. Visa says the card issuer controls any account hold.
The timing varies. Visa says most holds last less than 24 hours and sets a 72-hour removal limit. Starling tells customers the remainder usually returns quickly but can take up to 31 days. Your bank or card issuer can trace a reserved amount that remains.
A lower approved amount becomes the pump limit.
