Most merchants use one code based on their main business activity. Visa's rules require separate codes in specific cases, including automated fuel dispensers, and allow multiple codes for genuinely separate lines of business.
The code stays consistent through the transaction. A wrong code can send the wrong signal when card networks and their members use it for activity tracking, reporting and risk management.
The standard supplies the labels. Each card network sets its rules.

Two support workers are running for young adults facing homelessness.
Bee and Tracie support young adults in Eastleigh through their working week. On 13 September they will run the New Forest Marathon for Fledge, which provides safe accommodation, mentoring and practical help for independent living.
