The symbol predates the Bank by 34 years.
The L came from libra, Latin for pound. Scottish archive guidance shows how old accounts abbreviated pounds as lb or li with a stroke. The familiar curve grew from that working mark for keeping sums.
The first crossbar date remains unknown. One or two bars later became a stylistic choice. The Bank says its own notes moved to single-bar signs at different times between 1970 and 1990.

Thompson and Mosse Troops are raising money for 2nd Horsham's 2027 camp in Switzerland. Their group gives more than 160 local young people aged 4 to 14 regular outdoor activities and skills. The campaign closes on 18 September.

Tuesday: an automated pump can ask your bank or card company to reserve up to £120 before fuelling. The final cost replaces the temporary amount, and any unused balance becomes available again.
