Every direct participant must receive. Sending early is a choice.
A CHAPS direct participant can choose whether to send between 1:30am and 6am. Every direct participant must be ready to receive into its RTGS settlement account. Each participant then decides when to process the payment through its internal systems and credit customer accounts, within applicable law.
Bacs, Faster Payments, cards and cheque imaging keep their existing settlement timetables. The Bank proposes Sunday and selected bank-holiday settlement from 2029 at the earliest, followed by 22-hour operation on six days from 2031 at the earliest. Downtime remains part of the plan for maintenance and recovery.
CHAPS carries 0.4% of UK payments and 91% of sterling value.

The lifeguards will swim through the night.
More than 80 volunteers keep this Devon outdoor pool running, and its only paid staff are the lifeguards. From 6:30pm on Thursday, the team and supporters plan to swim continuously until Friday evening, aiming for 90 miles to help keep the pool open.
