The shop adds every item, fee and tax to the cent. Then the final cash amount follows a symmetric rule: totals ending in 1, 2, 6 or 7 cents fall; 3, 4, 8 or 9 cents rise; 0 and 5 stay put.
A $1.57 cash bill becomes $1.55. A $1.53 cash bill becomes $1.55. Cheques, debit cards, credit cards and other electronic payments keep the exact total because they can settle to the cent.
