The Act named four bank holidays in England and Ireland and five in Scotland. Bills of exchange and promissory notes due on one became payable on the next day on which they could lawfully be noted or protested. The same next-day treatment applied to notices of dishonour and presentation.
The 1871 Act was replaced in 1971. Parliament kept bank holidays inside a law about banking and financial dealings, while updating the rules for bills and notes to use the succeeding business day.
The law closed banks and shifted obligations. A day off for everyone grew by custom.
